Key Stage 4 Options
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended the Options Evening last night.Students were given an Options Form this morning which needs to be completed and returned to their Form Tutor by Friday 27 January. A copy of the Options Information Booklet, Presentation and Options Form are available on the school website. We hope that you have all the information you need to help your child in choosing their options subjects; however, please don’t hesitate to contact school or use the comment box on the Options Form if you have any questions.

Year 11 Art GCSE Exam
This is a reminder that the GCSE Art exam launches next week. You will find a copy of the exam paper and all resources to support your child on the Art Department Page on the school website. Students will receive a blue reply slip next week; this needs to be returned to Mrs Cockburn by Friday 20 January.

Year 11 Parents’ Evening Tuesday 17 January
A reminder that the Year 11 Parents’ Evening is taking place next Tuesday. Shape Your Future Event Wednesday 18 January 2017
Taking place at Fulford School on Wednesday 18 January from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, the Shape Your Future event is a chance for Year 10 and Year 11 students to talk directly to local and national employers about what employers are looking for and the different routes into good careers, including advanced and higher apprenticeships. There will also be information and talks on employment growth sectors and the job market in York, Leeds and North Yorkshire. Please click here for more information.

Studying Languages at A Level
A Level Languages students from York College are coming into school next week to share their experiences of studying a language at Further Education and the career opportunities this can lead to. Any Year 11 student interested in studying a language A Level is welcome to come along to A4 on Thursday lunchtime. Students should bring a packed lunch with them if they plan to attend.

Year 10 Work Experience
The deadline for completed work experience forms to be returned to school was last Friday. If your child has not yet returned theirs, it is essential that they hand it in as soon as possible.

Year 11 Maths Revision Materials
The Maths department have produced a pack of free revision materials for every Year 11 student. These will be available to collect from your child’s Maths teacher at Parents’ Evening on Tuesday.

BBC One Eat Well For Less?

Access arrangements – automated gates
Some of you may have already noticed that, to improve the security of our site, we have now invested in automated electronic gates for the entrance on the main drive. The gates are open at the beginning and end of the school day; if you need to come into school during the school day, please press the buzzer on the pillar next to the gate so that someone in the Office can buzz you in. To leave, either press the release button to the left of the gate if you are on foot, or, if you are driving, drive towards the gate and stop when you reach the sensor (about 5m away): the gates will automatically swing open towards you.

Access arrangements – students accessing the building before and after the school day
A reminder that the school building is open to students from 8.30 onwards in the morning. For their safety and comfort, please try to avoid dropping them at school before this time. In the afternoon, students are expected to leave the building by 3.30 unless they are with a member of staff or taking part in a supervised activity.

Extended Learning Day Tuesday 12 January 2017
Next Tuesday, all students will betaking part in an Extended Learning Day. For Key Stage 3 this will involve following a carousel of Citizenship activities based around the themes of crime and justice, while Year 10 students will be taking part in the next step of our Post-16 programme: Preparation for Employment.

Preparation for Employment
As part of our Extended Learning Day on Tuesday all Year 10 students will be following a carousel of activities led by external providers and employers. These sessions are planned to raise students’ awareness of what skills and attributes employers are looking for and to help prepare students for the world of work. Students will also receive guidance on how to complete application forms and how to write CVs. They will then be given an opportunity to complete an application form in advance of their Mock Interviews which will take place on Wednesday 22 March. As part of the interview, employers will refer to the application form and give students feedback and pointers for improvement.

Shape Your Future
As an extension to our whole school careers and Post-16 programme, all Key Stage 4students will attend an assembly on job market information on Monday 9 January. This assembly will help to explain to students what industries are available in our area and which sectors will be expanding in the coming years. All students will also be given a copy of Shape Your Future, an information booklet we have purchased through Careers Yorkshire and Humber, with whom we have been working to develop student awareness of employment opportunities. Following on from this assembly, we would like to invite all Year 10 and Year 11 students, along with their parents and carers, to attend a Shape Your Future careers evening on Wednesday 18 January at Fulford School. Shape Your Future is an event arranged by Millthorpe, Fulford and Archbishop Holgate’s schoolsto allow students and their families an opportunity to talk directly to local and national employers about what employers are looking for and the different routes into good careers, including advanced and higher apprenticeships. Year 11 Post-16 Taster Days Tuesday 10 and Thursday 12 January 2017
A reminder that the Post-16 Taster days for Year 11 students are taking place next Tuesday and Thursday. Students should have already booked places at the providers they wish to visit. All students must attend a taster day on the Tuesday as school is closed to Year 11 on that day; if students are not attending a taster day on Thursday they are expected to be in school as normal.

Time out for parents – the teenage years
Many parents find adolescence the most demanding time in their relationship with their child. There are many new challenges to face and its often hard to know what to do for the best. Family Matters York are running a 5 week course for parents of pre-teens and teenagers. The course runs for 5 weeks every Tuesday from 17 January up to 14 February.

There is a daytime course: 12.45pm to 2.45pm, at Acomb Baptist Church,Ridgeway, Acomb;
and an evening course: 7.30pm to 9.30pm, at The Gateway Centre, Front Street.

Air Cadet Recruitment
The City of York Air Cadets will be starting to recruit a new intake of cadets on 11 January 2017 at 19.30. The City of York Squadron is one of the largest and most successful in the region and offers young people the chance to take part in a wide range of activities including, shooting, fieldcraft, marching band and flying opportunities in gliders and powered aircraft. End of Term Arrangements
A reminder that on Friday 16 December, the last day of the Autumn Term, school will close for students at 12.20pm following a final assembly. Students in receipt of free school meals will be able to collect a packed lunch from the dining hall at 12.20pm. Please email the school office on admin@millthorpeschool.co.uk by Tuesday 13 December if you would like to order a packed lunch. If your child is normally picked up from school by taxi please make arrangements for them to be picked up at 12.20pm on Friday 16 December.

Lifebag Project
Last month the student council launched a collection to fill rucksacks with essential items for unaccompanied children living in the refugee camps in Greece. The response has been overwhelming and we would like to thank everyone who donated for the kindness and generosity. The rucksacks were collected on Wednesday and will be on their way to Greece in a week or so.

Careers Provision
As a school we have worked hard over the years to deliver independent careers information and guidance and we have embedded a strong programme for our students providing advice, support and information on their choicespost-16. This year we are expanding this programme to offer a more rounded and comprehensive progression programme through to Key Stage 5. Highlights of our provision include:

  • The upcoming ‘Exploring Pathways’ eventon 5 December, which provides Year 11 students with opportunities to speak to Sixth Form and higher education providers to help students decide what they will do when they leave Millthorpe.
  • It also includes a careers fair, where students can get information and advice from representatives from many local and national employers.
  • An introduction to START, an online careers programme that students can use to explore, investigate and plan possible career paths.
  • A number of useful links on the school website, including the ‘Shape Your Future‘ booklet.

Make Your Mark
This year, over 700 Millthorpe students took part in the Make Your Mark ballot. Organised by the UK Youth Parliament, the ballot gathers young people’s views on the most important issues to campaign on for the year ahead. Bikeability – Advanced Cycle Training for Years 7 and 8
Students in Years 7 and 8 have the opportunity to take part in City of York Council Advanced Cyclist Training, Bikeability Level 3, at school. The training will take place in a single 2 hour session and is delivered by professional trainers qualified to the Bikeability National Standards. Year 8 students were given a letter with an application form last week and Year 7s will be bringing home theirs today; a copy of this is available on the school website by clicking here. The deadline for completed application forms to be returned to school is next Friday 2 December.

Army Careers Presentation
The Army Careers Centre in York is hosting a Junior Entry Presentation for Year 11 students who are interested in joining the Army after their GCSEs and who are hoping to go to the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. The presentation is taking place at Imphal Barracks, Fulford Road, York on Monday 23 January 2017 at 6.30pm. Please click here for more information and an application form. In order to build on last year’s work on raising whole school awareness of literacy, we have created a Checking for Literacy card for students. The card is aimed primarily at Years 8 and 9 but may be useful for all years groups. Students in Years 8 and 9 will be given a card to stick into their English books; their English teacher will help them use it effectively and encourage them to use it to check written work in all subjects. Maths: Homework and Revision App
We now have access to a fantastic revision app for use by all students to help with their maths homework and revision. Students have been given login details and passwords by their class teacher. You can get the free app on the following link http://mathsapp.pixl.org.uk/PMA.swf or by searching for ‘PiXL maths app’. The app can be downloaded onto any smartphone, tablet or PC.

Children in Need Friday 18 November
There will be a non-uniform day on Friday 18 November in support of Children in Need. Donations of £1 for non-uniform will be collected by Tutors next week and Directors of Achievement have promised to don fancy dress outfits if students raise an additional £100 per House. We will also be holding a bake sale to help raise money and any donations of baked goods would be very gratefully received. Any cakes should be taken to C8 on Thursday or Friday morning and will be available to buy at lunchtime on Friday.

Year 11Post-16 Taster Days Tuesday 10 and Thursday 12 January 2017
A reminder that the Post-16 Taster Days for Year 11 students are taking place on Tuesday 10 and Thursday 12 January 2017. All students must attend a Taster Day on Tuesday 10 January and are welcome to attend further sessions on Thursday 12 January.

The Taster Days are an excellent way to experience what it will be like at a college or sixth form school and give opportunities to sample courses and ask questions of both staff and other students. The jump from GCSE to A Levels, BTECs, Vocational Courses and Apprenticeships can seem huge and the Taster Days can help answer questions or concerns ahead of applying and attending the following year.

Please visit the Post-16 Education page for information and booking details for each post-16 provider. Please note, not all providers are offering sessions on both of the days. Paper copies of this information is available in school; alternatively students can apply online through each provider’s website. We will be asking students to confirm with us which taster sessions they are signed up to attend but it is their responsibility to book their own places. If students need any further support with this process they can speak to Mr Gillbanks or Mrs Anderson.

GCSE English Literature Revision Guides
The English Department are offering Year 10 and 11 students the opportunity to purchase revision guides to support them with their GCSE English Literature revision. The cost of these guides is £2.75 each. If you would like your child to have these revision guides, please ask them to bring correct money to the English Office. Pupil Premium students will be provided with these guides free of charge.

Revision guides are available on the following texts: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, Blood Brothers and the Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology. All students are studying the poetry anthology. If your child is not sure which Literature texts they are studying, they should check with their teacher first before buying the guides.

Bonfire Night
A timely reminder, with bonfire night almost upon us, to make sure children enjoy themselves safely. Both bonfires and fireworks can, of course, cause serious injury if misused, so please follow sensible precautions to keep your child safe. Remember it is illegal for children under 18 to purchase fireworks or possess them in a public place. Further safety guidance can be found on the RoSPA website.

The MFL department recognises the benefits of independent study, which undoubtedly boosts students’ performance, confidence and enjoyment of their language studies.

Mary Glasgow magazines (maryglasgowplus.com) have publications aimed at improving grades by:

– developing confidence through independent reading of authentic texts.

– providing exam practice using the activities on every page and online.

– offering a wider access to cultural information through interesting articles.

The subscriptions are offered for all levels of learner and consist of 5 bi-monthly issues, MP3 listening materials and online interactive activities. Syria Appeal
A huge thank you to everyone who donated items for our Syria appeal last week and to the students, staff and other volunteers who helped pack it up ready for transportation. We were overwhelmed with the number of items we received and the generosity you have shown – it will make a tremendous difference to families in Syria at this perilous time.

Year 11 Pre Public Exams
The Pre Public Exams for Year 11 are taking place from Monday 21 November until Friday 2 December. These exams are of vital importance to our students as they will give them an accurate assessment of where they are in their learning and highlight areas that need more work before their final GCSEs in May and June 2017. The results will also be used in some subjects to decide the level of exam that they will sit in their GCSEs. For more information please see the Pre Public Exams letter and timetable on the website.

Midday Lunchtime Supervisor
We are looking to recruit a Lunchtime Supervisor to support a student with additional needs during the lunch break each day. The role would involve one to one work with a student and oversight in the dining hall and around school.
