Millthorpe School is seeking to appoint an Assistant Headteacher who can bring their experience, enthusiasm and determination to our team. Due to our commitment to ensuring that everyone is able ‘To be the best that we can be’, we are looking to further enhance our provision for all students to succeed. This role is an excellent opportunity to develop the whole school strategic leadership of the provision for SENd and disadvantaged students.

We are locally a school of choice for parents of children with SENd and we have close working relationships with CYC and other external agencies. We have a great reputation across York for our inclusive approach to education and are known to find solutions to the most difficult situations to ensure that parental choice is upheld whenever possible. We have a large, friendly department offering regular opportunities to parents to meet up and discuss progress or concerns.

The role will also include leadership of our Pupil Premium strategy. We have a lower than average number of disadvantaged students at Millthorpe with less than 17% of our school cohort identified as PP and 12% of the school identified as FSM.

Science Technician

Millthorpe School is seeking to recruit a Science Technician to provide a support
service to the science department, enabling a safe and well equipped environment
for practical work that will support the teaching of science to all pupils. The
successful candidate will be working as part of a team of 2, in a department with 8
science teachers and labs, and with 2 well-resourced prep rooms. The role will
involve ensuring that classrooms are equipped and prepared for lessons (including
the preparation of materials, apparatus or specimens that may be required for
demonstrations or practical work), maintaining appropriate levels of
materials/resources, and cleaning and maintaining apparatus and equipment where
necessary.

The person we are looking for will have experience of working with children and
young people in a secondary school science environment and be motivated to work
in a school science environment. They will also have an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent
in a relevant science based subject and a practical understanding of health and
safety legislation, first aid, risk assessments and safe manual handling techniques.
Good interpersonal skills are required, together with an organised and methodical
approach, and the ability to establish and maintain effective and supportive working
relationships with staff and students.

Ideally, the person we are looking for will be able to work full time (37 hours per
week), but this is flexible and we are happy to consider applications from candidates
who are able to work a minimum of 25 hours per week.

We are seeking to recruit a school cleaner for 20 hours per week between the hours of 6-8am and 3.30-7.30 pm (Flexible)

  • Duties include working as part of the team to clean the school, emptying bins, hoovering, polishing and general cleanliness.
  • To carry out periodic cleaning tasks which includes high level dusting, wall washing, removing chewing gum from under desks and tables, cleaning the inside surfaces of all windows, cleaning behind radiators, removing curtains and blinds for cleaning, dusting picture frames and other similar duties.

Millthorpe School is seeking to appoint skilled and experienced tutors to support disadvantaged students develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Literacy tutor(s): up to 10 hours per week
  • Numeracy tutor(s): up to 10 hours per week

Applicants should have full QTS and experience of teaching either English or Maths at secondary level. Experience of developing and delivering intervention programmes to support the progress of targeted groups of students, or whole school literacy or numeracy programmes, would be an advantage.

Tutoring is proposed to take place with small groups (up to 3 students), during and/or immediately before or after the school day. Each student is expected to attend a series of around 10 weekly sessions. The focus of the sessions is to make rapid impact on students’ literacy or numeracy skills, to improve both their progress in English and Maths and their ability to access and perform well in other subjects. The programme follows the government’s agenda to offer additional support to disadvantaged students to counteract the disproportionate negative impacts of the pandemic on this group of learners.

The potholder’s will be expected to:

  • devise and deliver an effective programme of tutoring intervention in either literacy or numeracy, appropriate for disadvantaged students in Years 7-11
  • record inputs and outcomes, and evaluate the impact of the programme for each student
  • liaise with senior and middle leaders to ensure the programme complements the students’ existing curriculum

Flexible contracts of between 5-10 hours per week will be considered. The posts will run from now until the end of the academic year in the first instance, when arrangements will be reviewed, with the possibility of further opportunities in September.

The posts are offered at the applicant’s current/most recent teaching scale point, up to and including UPS3. 1 hour paid PPA/liaison time will be allocated for every 5 hours of teaching
