Millthorpe Thinks… General Election
On Tuesday 23 May, Millthorpe will be hosting a hustings. Students have been invited to attend and will have the opportunity to ask candidates standing in the York Central constituency about issues that concern them. Rachael Maskell (Labour), Nick Love (Liberal Democrats) and Andy D’Agorne (Green Party) will be discussing issues and answering our students questions. Although the Green Party are not standing a candidate in York Central, Cllr D’Agorne has been invited as our students expressed a wish to hear their policies.

On election day (Thursday 8 June) students will then take to the polls as we host our ‘Millthorpe Thinks’ election. Students have already been asked to sign up to the electoral roll and these students will be provided with a ballot paper on the morning and given the opportunity to have their say. Results will be published on the school website as soon as the votes have been counted.

Key Stage 3 Exams After Half Term

Week commencing 12 June – Year 7 and Year 8 students will sit an exam in the following subjects:

The exams will last between 30 minutes and 1 hour and will take place in lesson time and in the students’ usual classroom. All other subjects will teach their timetabled lessons as normal.

Next week and at the start of the week after half term, Ms Andrle, Assistant Headteacher, will spend 20-30 minutes with each Year 7 and Year 8 English class, explaining their exam timetable and helping them to plan their revision for the first week back after half term. During this session, students will write their exams and their revision plan in their planner. We do not expect Year 7 and Year 8 students to revise during the half term holiday but all homework in the week after half term will be revision homework.

York Pride Friday 9 June 2017
Many families will be aware that the annual York Pride celebration takes place next month with a number of city-wide events leading up to the York Pride Parade on Saturday 10 June. York Pride is a celebration of equality between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual people. In line with their mission to promote York as a welcoming city, the City Council and the Fairness and Equalities Board are encouraging employers in York to show their support for York Pride by taking part in a ‘Raise your Rainbow’ day on Friday 9 June. Employees are encouraged to dress in rainbow colours, or simply wear a rainbow badge. For more information about what Millthorpe will be doing to celebrate York Pride please click here to read the full letter on the school website.

Year 10 Mock GCSE Art Exam
Year 10 Art students have started the six school weeks preparation period (plus May half term) which leads to a final piece being produced during 10 hours of formal exam sessions in the week beginning Monday 3 July. The theme of the mock exam is ‘Identity’ with exam launch resources and schedules available on the Art page of the school website and Show My Homework. As will be the case throughout the final GCSE exam during the Spring Term of Year 11, the support of parents and carers will be very important to student success. Encouraging your child to plan and manage the time available is crucial. We will keep you up-to-date and appreciate your support throughout the next six school weeks. If you have any questions please email Mrs Cockburn on

Year 7 Bolton Abbey Trip
As part of the final term, all Year 7 students will be studying river environments within the UK. With this in mind, Bolton Abbey has been chosen as a location that will offer students invaluable first-hand experience of a rapidly changing upland river environment. The cost of the trip resources is being covered by the school, however we would like to ask for a contribution of £10 towards the considerable travel costs which can be paid using ParentPay. Please ensure your child’s consent form is completed and returned to the School Office by Friday 26 May.

If your child will be observing Ramadan this year please let us know if there is anything we can do in school to support them during this time.

Year 9 Languages Grammar and Translation Workbook
Students in Year 9 start their GCSE Modern Foreign Languages this term and to enhance the resources we provide as part of these courses in school, we are encouraging students to purchase a ‘Grammar and Translation Workbook’ at a cost of £4. The workbooks, produced by Pearson, are designed to support the AQA specification and comprise three sections: Grammar and Translation; Translation in Practice; and Verb Tables.

We strongly recommend that all students purchase this valuable resource for the start of the new academic year as teachers would like to be able to set homework tasks from it. You can purchase a workbook using ParentPay; students can then collect a copy from their languages teacher.

Year 7 Fortnightly SPaG Focus
The current fortnightly SPaG focus is General Spelling 3. You may wish to support your child’s learning by using the supporting resources which are available by clicking here. Visit the literacy page on the school website for the previous SPaG focus supporting resources and other literacy materials.
