Extended Learning Day (Spring Term)

Year 7

Year 7 take part in a Murder Mystery Day. Clues to the murder of 'Headteacher' Mr Black can be found around the school. Students work together to discover who commited the ghastly crime. As part of the activity, students also take part in a drama workshop.

 

Year 8

Year 8 have a selction of visits on offer from the Science Department:

Yorkshire Museum/Castle Museum - Students study forces and then toys and evolution in the fossil record.

Royal Armouries - Students study different armoury and protection methods and return to school to complete a web quest on body protection.

National Coal Mining Museum - Students go down a mine to see how coal was mined. In the afternoon students complete a rocks trail.

 

Year 9

hmdYear 9 follow a series of activities to help support Holocaust Memorial Day. The RE department introduce students to what happened at Auschwitz Concentration Camp and discover who was reponsible for the Holocaust.

The History department investigate the background to the holocaust and identify the causes with students participating in a research task.

The Languages department present an activity on the German Resistance Movement during Wolrd War Two. In particular, they focus on Sophie Scholl and her resistance group 'The White Rose' which spread pamphlets against Hitler and the national-socialist regime, requesting passive opposition, then the fall of the governement. Students learn about Sophie's family background and watch part of a film adaptation of her story. They then imagine themselves as supporters of Sophie as she is awaiting trial by the Nazis and write to her whilst she is in prison. The following are just a few of the letters by Year 9 students which are moving, poignant and speak for themselves.

Year 11

Some students studying Triple Science work with thier class teachers and the remaining students join the PE department for a series of sessions which aim to introduce the students to a variety of new sports. Students paticipate in Rocketball, Boxercise and Trampolining.
