Millthorpe School has been a co-educational, comprehensive school since 1985. Previously the school had been Nunthorpe Boys' Grammar School from 1920, combining with Mill Mount Girls' Grammar School in 1985 to form Millthorpe. We are situated in a pleasant residential area in the centre of the city and draw most of our students from the surrounding area. We are very privileged to learn in an historical building with beautiful green spaces.
Our Language Specialism is a Centre of Excellence offering a wide range of courses and accreditation at Key Stage 4 for students. We have recently refurbished our Language Laboratory to enhance the teaching of modern foreign languages at Millthorpe. Our Specialism supports our local community with conversation classes and we provide language teaching and training at four of our partner primary schools. This has reduced from seven as our partners are now able to teach French without our support. Our resources are supporting the teaching of languages across the City of York.
We have recently (September 2010) been awarded the prestigious International School Award. This recognises the significant work of the school in raising students' awareness, through the curriculum, of other cultures. It is the second time we have gained this award. We are very proud of the range of opportunities we offer students at Millthorpe to develop as young adults. The International School Award is an outward sign that as a school we celebrate the heritage of York and respect and value different cultures and beliefs through the every day life of the school.
