International Award

International School Policy

The British Council International School Award recognises the international dimension within a school’s curriculum.

Global education involves the need for pupils to be aware of the wider world in which we live and to understand the complex ideas of international interdependency. Global Citizenship is the gaining of knowledge, skills and the understanding of concepts and institutions necessary to become informed, active and responsible citizens.

The intention of Millthorpe School is to promote Global Citizenship issues where applicable in all areas of the curriculum. The school seeks to enable pupils to understand, respect and celebrate diversity within the global community and to be aware of the importance of human rights. Pupils will be made aware of the importance of social justice in improving the welfare of people and as an element of sustainable development.

Our Objectives

  • To identify opportunities for developing the Global Dimension throughout the school.

  • To establish partnerships and links through visits and by welcoming visitors to the school.

  • To provide opportunities to learn about key issues relating to the global dimension e.g. fair trade, human rights, sustainable development, religious and cultural diversity.

  • To ensure that all pupils are aware of the school’s commitment to the global dimension across the curriculum.

  • To ensure that the designated member of staff is able to support the international commitment throughout the school.

Following our achievement in gaining the International School Award on 10th October 2007 Ann Davis, the International Coordinator, attended the Brewery Conference Centre in London where she was presented with the award by George Alagiah, BBC Newsreader.

Current Projects

Towards the end of Christmas term 2007, the Year 8 Council have raised over £300 for our partner school Aline Sitoe Diatta Lycee in Oussouye, Senegal. Members of the School Council held a stall at breaktime and sold a range of Christmas gifts made in Senegal. Students spent over £150 on bracelets, necklaces and other items, with staff also spending £150 on pictures, cards and jewellery. All proceeds of the sale will go towards building a library, providing books and enabling pupils at our partner school to e-mail pupils at Millthorpe.
