Attendance

Absence

Regular attendance at school is extremely important and Millthorpe School has one of the highest attendance records amongst City of York secondary schools. If a student is absent from school, we need to receive a telephone call from a parent or carer (before 10.30am) each day they are absent, unless a period of absence has already been notified to us. If a child is going to be absent for several days, please inform the school office on the first day and your child's register will then be marked appropriately. The school uses a computerised system to track student' absences which enables us to obtain the reason for the absence as soon as possible and alert you if your child is not in school when he/she should be. This system automatically telephones parents/carers directly if their child is marked absent at morning registration and the school has not been informaed of the reason for the absence.

Please ensure that we are informed of any changes to your contact details.

If your son/daughter needs to attend a medical or dental appointment during the school day, you will needs to send a note that your child can show to their form tutor and the office staff when they sign in and out of school.

Lateness

Punctuality at registration is very important. Only students who are present in their form room at the start of registration will be marked present. Students who arrive in their form room after registration has started will be marked late and will need to sign in at the school office. They will be given twenty minutes detention that lunchtime and if they fail to attend, one hour's detention after school (parents/cares will be given 24 hours' notice of an after-school detention).

If your child is late and he/she does not sign in at the school office, our computerised system will automatically generate a telephone call home to check on the reason for absence at registration.

Family Holidays

Students are allowed to be absent for up to two weeks per school year to accompany their parents/carers on holiday. However, this is at the discretion of the school. Parents/carers should complete a holiday form two weeks before the proposed date requesting permission for absence for a family holiday. The effect of holidays on children's progress is significant and such absences should be avoided if possible. In particular, the demands of coursework and continuous assessment for GCSE courses make holidays during term time for Year 10 and Year 11 students very undesireable. Please be aware that some subjects now have important GCSE exams in Year 10 as well as in Year 11 and these exams cannot be rescheduled due to student absence.
