The Olympic torch in York

The torch convoy will arrive in the city at 17:23 on the 19 June at York College. The convoy itself will have about 22 vehicles (including Police outriders and sponsor activation trucks) and here in York will also be followed by 200 cyclists.  We are expecting it to take about 15 minutes to pass any one point from start to finish. There will be a rolling road closure on inbound traffic along Tadcaster Road through until it reaches the city centre foot streets and then out again on Bishopthorpe Road. We are expecting that there will be knock on delays across the city.

Rather than get stuck in traffic you may wish to set off early to come to the free concert that starts at  17:00 on the Knavesmire. Hosted by Andy Akinwolere (ex Blue Peter) and featuring the winners of Sky‘s smash hit dance show ‘Got To Dance’ Chris & Wes and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ finalists Twist & Pulse  and rap star Katy B  as well as our own York Arts Academy African drummers Umbu and Calabash and the Zamar Gospel choir from the University of York. We will have a pile of sports activities happening prior to the concert so there will be something for everyone from 14:30 onwards. The torch itself will be arriving at the racecourse at 18:50 and this will be broadcast on BBC news. If you wish to attend the free concert please register your interest on the website http://www.yorkgold2012.co.uk/. This does not issue you with a ticket, as the event is free, but it will help York to plan for the safety and parking at the event.

The following day on the 20 June the Olympic Torch will run from the Minster to the NRM where it will leave for points north on the steam train the “Scots Guardsman”. There will be city centre road closures operating between 07:40 and 08:20 which may again cause delays for those using the city centre.

U16 Regional Rounds Netball

On Saturday 28 January Millthorpe School’s U16 team took part in the Regional rounds of the National Schools competition which was held at Ashville College. 8 teams from across Yorkshire and Humberside took part, with the top two qualifying for the National Finals in March.

Millthorpe’s first match was against the Grammar School at Leeds. This was a hard match (Leeds went on to win the competition unbeaten) and with players from the National Talent League in their squad, they were too strong and they took a 6-1 lead into half time. The game was pretty physical at times with the umpires penalising a lot of contact however Millthorpe managed to take some control in the game, winning the second half 2-1 but ultimately losing 7-3. The match knocked the confidence of the players and this was reflected in the next match against Sheffield High School. Against a poor start resulted in a lost match. Despite excellent defending from Kate Chapman and Deni Hancox, Sheffield were leading 7-3 at half time. A centre court resurgence, including some outstanding interceptions from Cassie Thomas and Rachel Jarman, Millthorpe’s player of the tournament, resulted in a tight second half and the final result was 8-4. The next game was where the girls found their resilience. Determined to put the previous two matches behind them, Millthorpe took on Wolfreton School from Hull. Excellent composure in the shooting circle from Emily Farrow and Laura Stables resulted in an 11-2 victory and a restoring of confidence. Still in with a chance to qualify for the National Finals, matches against Hymers (from Hull) and Wales School (from Sheffield) saw wins of 10-4 and 12-2 respectively. Against The Brooksbank School from West Yorkshire the girls were again challenged with the ball going from one end to the other. Excellent circle edge feeding from Holly Murphy proved to be the decisive factor with Millthorpe edging the contest 8-7. Our final match against Ashville also proved to be a tight affair, Millthorpe taking the lead only for Ashville to close it down. A 9-9 result fairly reflected the contest. in the end the loss to Sheffield proved vital and Millthorpe were edged into third place by the Brooksbank School who we had earlier beaten. The squad worked very hard and never gave up, with lots of spectators passing comment about their sportsmanship and their lovely style of play. Whilst we were disappointed not to qualify for the Nationals, we are very proud of the squads achievement.

The squad were Kate Chapman (Year 10), Deni Hancox, Rachel Jarman, Cassie Thomas (capt.), Holly Murphy, Laura Stables, Emily Farrow (Year 10) and Lily Proctor.
