Children In Need - Millthorpe Goes Spotty

cinlogo

On 19 November, Millthorpe School students participated in fundraising events for Children in Need. The theme for Children in Need this year was "Show Your Spots". During the day, students enjoyed a number of "spot-based " activities, which included

  • A "spot the difference" quiz for students to complete
  • Connect 4 and Twister contests
  • A spotty invention competition
  • A non-uniform day where students had to wear something spotty
  • A spotty treasure hunt
  • A spotty bake sale
  • Spotty face painting
  • Pudsey points instead of form points - giving parents the opportunity to help us raise money for Children in Need whilst promoting the school's reward system.

Each activity gave students the chance to win some great Pudsey prizes as well as entering our star prize draw to win some amazing items dinated by our local community as well as businesses further afield.

Millthorpe would like to thank the following businesses for helping us out in what was an exciting and highly successful day. Thanks go out to: BHS, Nandos, Game, Lush, The Fudge Kitchen, CC Enterprises, Milkshack, Body Shop, Reel Cinema, Yorvik Centre and International Stock Distributors.

We raised £1500 for 'Children in Need'. Thank you so much for your support.

School Production - "Little Shop of Horrors"

Following the success of previous years' sell-out productions of 'Annie', 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Bugsy Malone', to name but a few, the Autumn term played host to Millthorpe's annual school production. This year was the popular rock musical 'Little Shop of Horrors', written by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman and based on the low-budget 1960s black comedy film.

The show, set in a flower shop on 'Skid Row', follows hapless flower shop owner Seymour Krelborn as he dreams of a better life with his love Audrey, but finds that raising a plant that feeds on human blood might not be the way to get there after all!

Auditions and rehearsals for this most gruesome of musicals began in September and continued at increasing pace throughout the Autumn term. After months of very hard work, an intense schedule of rehearsals and lots of laughs we finally performed to three very responsive audiences on 17, 18 and 19 November.

The experience was thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding for all involved and many thanks go to all the staff, students and parents who contributed to the overall success of this event and made it a fabulous experience for all. A special mention, however, has to be given to Connor Mellor, who was wonderful in the lead role of Seymour, and Mr Monteagle, who invested hours of time in making sure we had a plant big and ugly enough to eat him!

International School Awardisalogo

The British Council has granted Millthorpe School the prestigious International School Award for the second time. Ivan Noble, coordinator of the schools' bid for International Status was "delighted".

"The school has worked hard over the last few years to develop an international dimension to its work - not just through the fact that we're a language college but also through projects in school such as visiting speakers and other events".

According to the British Council, the award seeks to "celebrate, develop, recognise and accredit outstanding practice." John Rolfe, Manager of the Award at the British Council, passed on his congratulations "for excellent commitment to the enriching, creative and innovative international dimensions of teaching and learning".

Over the last year, the school has held a number of events including an International Day, a world languages morning, a visiting Holocaust survivor, a talent show to raise money for Haiti and - last June - a performance poetry competition to raise money for a new school in India. The poetry featured entries from the whole of Year 7 and 160 students turned out at lunchtime to hear the shortlisted poems competing. Over £500 was raised and this was donated to a new schools projec in India. Lesley Eden, who co-ordinated the poetry competition, went out to India over the summer as part of a volunteering project and was able to see first-hand the impact the school's contribution would have.

Ivan Noble commented that "the real pleasure for us is to be able to continue our work and develop even more international links in the coming year.

Election Fever Hits Millthorpe

While York's political candidates are busy campaigning for the election on the 6 May, students at Millthorpe prepare for their own mock election to be held on the same day.

Over two hundred students are involved as party members and campaign managers, each competing to elect their candidate. While the election orginally was intended to include just the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties, soon students formed their own Green, Monster Raving Looney, UKIP and Socialist Worker parties. All seven parties have been given just ten pounds and a pack of paper in their party colours to help promote their cause. Students have been encouraged to use their initiative to have as great an impact as possible. All parties will present their case in assemblies, as well as canvassing students in form rooms and in the school corridors.

On the 6 May students will vote for their choice of party using real election papers and ballot boxes. The winning party will have the opportunity to set out its vision for education before a special meeting of the school's governing body, senior leadership team and a senior advisor from York council.

Political Debate

Inspired by the recent television debates, Millthorpe will be hosting a live political debate to support the mock election and to give students an insight into the priorities of each political party. On the 30 April at 2.00pm, representatives from the Consevative, Liberal Democrats, Moster Raving Loony and Green parties will come to Millthorpe to answer questions put together by students.
