On Saturday 12th November Millthorpe School took part in the County Round of the National Schools Competition and for the first time in the schools history, won the trophy!
It was a gloriously sunny day – perfect netball weather – and Millthorpe set the tone for their tournament in the first match against Ryedale School. Excellent shooting from Laura Stables saw Millthorpe race into a 5-1 lead at half time. Some tweaking of technique during a half-time team talk proved effective and Millthorpe ran away the winners 15-2. The second match was to be the hardest match of the tournament and against the team who ultimately finished second. This was a very tight game with few opportunities. Goal Defence Deni Hancox (who was Millthorpe’s player of the tournament) gained some crucial rebounds in the Ashville attacking circle and Kate Chapman (Goal Keeper) marked their Goal Shooter out of the game. Millthorpe came away 7-4 winners. Stokesley were the next opponents and Millthorpe returned to form, a slow first half (5-3) followed by a second half of flowing, precision netball saw Millthorpe win 13-4. Excellent centre court pressure from Rachel Jarman gaining some valuable turnovers combined with outstanding play from Emily Farrow were the highlights of the game. Local rivals Joseph Rowntree were our next opponents. Again a close first half (3-2) gave way to a fluent second with an all-round performance from the team, in particular from Cassie Thomas and Holly Murphy who fed the circle beautifully. Millthorpe won 9-2. After the lunch break, Millthorpe first took on Queen Mary’s, resulting in a 14-5 victory and then Whitby Community College, winning 13-1. The final match proved to be vital. A win meant that Millthorpe would collect the trophy, a loss would mean 3 teams would still be in the running for the title and it would go down to goal average. Millthorpe played some positive netball, putting pressure on in the centre court areas with some fabulous interceptions from Rachel and Deni. Cool shooting under pressure from Laura and Emily saw Millthorpe take a 5-3 lead into half time. Sustained pressure from Kate in the defending circle and excellent linking play between Laura and Cassie kept Millthorpe in possession, beating Harrogate Ladies College 8-4. Having scored 79 goals and conceded just 22, Millthorpe were not just the only undefeated team, but also the team with the best goal average. The players (of which 2 are a year younger than the rest of the team) now go on to represent North Yorkshire at the Regional Round of the National Schools Competition.
Millthorpe has embarked on a new project, aimed at gaining Fairtrade Schools Status for the school. A Fairtrade school is a school that is committed to Faitrade. This means we help young people understand how to make global trade fairer. It also means we sell and use Fairtrade products in school and take action for Fairtrade in the school and local community.
Fairtrade makes sure that farmers and producers get a fair and stable price for their products to support their families and invest in their future. Driven by the student led Fairtrade steering group, our aim for the 2011-12 academic year is to gain the Fairtrade accreditation.
Our Fairtrade steering group recently had a stall at Year 6 Parent's Induction evening advertising where parents can purchase items of Fairtrade clothing to supplement the Millthorpe jumpers and shirts.
The steering group is always open to new ideas, new members (especially parents and governors), and particularly new contacts within the local community. If you feel you can help our efforts to become a Fairtrade school in any way, no matter how small then please contact Mr Sladen in the Geography department.
On Friday 24 June staff and students enjoyed a fantastic evening at the Year 11 Prom, held this year at York Race Course. Many thanks to Miss Ramsay and Miss Hogan for all their hard work in organising the event.
Although Mr Wootton, former Headteacher of Millthorpe, was unable to attend the prom he came into school last Wednesday to wish Year 11 students well and he continues to make a good recovery.
Year 11 have now finished all of their GCSE examinations and we look forward to celebrating their achievements on Thursday 25 August.
