Our vision is to:

· Inspire students to become enthusiastic language learners with the confidence to communicate in a foreign language for practical purposes.

Our aims are to:

· Give all students contact with real experience of the culture of another country to encourage them to become tolerant, global citizens.

· Use languages to develop students’ skills to enable them to market themselves effectively in a global economy.

· Show students how language learning can develop valuable skills for use in other subject areas and life beyond school.

Key Stage 3

In year 7, students do either two hours of French or German a week following the AQA endorsed courses Studio or Stimmt. Families may choose to opt for either language at the point of year 6 transition. All courses are designed to equip students to deal effectively with the demands of GCSE and beyond.

Students are assessed in the four key skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) at half-termly points throughout the year and then again at the end of year 7.

In year 8, the 32 students from each year half who have made the most progress study a second language (either French or German depending on which language they have studied in year 7).

Key Stage 4

This qualification is linear. This means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course.

Students study all of the following themes on which the assessments are based. Theme 1: Identity and culture Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest Theme 3: Current and future study and employment.

GCSE Modern Foreign Languages has a Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) and a Higher Tier (grades 4–9). Students must take all four question papers (listening, speaking, reading and writing) at the same tier.
