Goodbye and good luck to Year 11s

Today, we said goodbye to our Year 11 students. Students spent the morning in Form and their normal lessons, and at break time, they were given complimentary refreshments in the canteen. From break time onwards, in time-honoured tradition, the students signed each other’s school shirts and wrote messages in each other’s leavers’ notebooks. Students then attended their Leavers’ Assembly led by Mr Baybutt, before we said a really fond farewell as many wiped tears from their eyes as they went! You can take a look at a few photos here.

We look forward to welcoming Year 11 students to the Prom on 8 July and then again for their GCSE Results day on 12 August.
Congratulations and well done Year 11 – we are very proud of you.

Information for Year 11 parents

Archbishop Holgate’s School is running a project called Project Prom which can be accessed by any student in York. The project allows students to loan items at no cost, and then return the items back to the school after they have been used. There are dresses and suits as well as shoes and other accessories.

If you would like to know more about how the project works or if you would like to book an appointment to view some of the items available please call Archbishop Holgate’s on 01904 411341 or the School mobile which is 07957621824 and ask to speak with Gail Hirst.

Family Matters courses

The short courses offered by Family Matters York give parents the opportunity to meet other parents and find out that they are not alone; to think about what they are doing with their children; and, in the light of the course material and ideas from other parents, decide if they want to make any changes.

The following courses, all of which are offered online via Zoom, are starting after half-term:

  • Handling Anger in the Family
  • Time Out for Parents – the Teenage Years
  • Time Out for Parents – the Primary Years

To book a place or for further information please contact Helen Atkinson on 07393 147259 or email helenatkinson@fmy.org.uk. You can also find more information on the Family Matters website.

Concerns over trespassing/vandalism on the railway

We have been contacted by Network Rail once again as they are concerned by the level of trespass on the railway in our area. Whilst there is no direct evidence that this involves Millthorpe students, it does involve teenagers in our area.

Most students will have been shown a video from Network Rail in form time to highlight the dangers of trespassing on the railway but we would like to ask all parents and carers to reinforce this message with their child at home. The video can be viewed here.

Face coverings

Further to government advice, from Monday 17 May, students will no longer be required to wear face coverings at school, including in corridors and other communal areas. Staff will continue to wear face coverings in communal areas and corridors where social distancing cannot be maintained. Whilst we hope it won’t come to pass, the reintroduction of the wearing of face coverings in school may be advised if there is a renewed local outbreak.

Please do remind your child(ren) that they will still be required to wear a face covering on public transport and in shops.

Teacher Training Day

A reminder that school will be closed to students on Monday 7 June for a Teacher Training Day.

Final call for Year 11 photos

Thank you to the many parents and carers who have sent in photos of their child(ren) growing up to be included in the leavers’ assembly. This is the final call for photos so if you have any that you are happy for us to share, please send these to y11leavers@millthorpe.southbank.academy.

Please only send a maximum of five photos as this is the most we are able to include. The deadline for sending photos to be included in the assembly is Tuesday 18 May.

Free school meals

City of York Council are funding the provision of free school meal vouchers for the half-term break. Vouchers will be distributed on Friday 28 May.

School uniform – Eco Laundry

In this week’s assembly, Ms Andrle talked to students about the impact of the clothing industry on the environment and how using our Millthorpe Eco Laundry can help to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as save money. At the end of the assembly she asked students to talk to their families about the assembly, to donate uniform that no longer fits by bringing it to the office in a bag and to write down the new Eco Laundry email address – ecolaundry@millthorpe.southbank.academy – in planners. Uniform can be ordered from the Eco Laundry via this email address and will be left in the office for collection. The cost (£3, £2 or £1 per item) is added to ParentPay.

Inclusion Review Survey

City of York Council launched an Inclusion Review Survey earlier this week which asks children and young people with SEND, their families, carers, health and childcare professionals, for their views on proposals to change provision for young people with SEND in York.

They would like to hear people’s views on the following key areas of provision:

  • early years provision;
  • provision for children and young people with SEND in mainstream schools;
  • support for children and young people with Communication and Interaction Difficulties, including Autism;
  • support for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs;
  • provision at Applefields School.
The consultation is available online at www.york.gov.uk/SENDInclusionReview and paper copies can also be available on request from Explore and Gateway Libraries. The consultation will close on 30 June.
