Road Safety

Road safety messages to students

There have been a number of reports recently from members of the public concerned about risky behaviour by Millthorpe students on their way to and from school. We have begun to address this issue with students in school and we would be very grateful if you could reinforce with your child(ren) the vital importance of taking good care when crossing roads.

Driving into school

A reminder that parents/carers should under no circumstances be driving into school to drop off or collect students unless by prior arrangement with the school (e.g. for a student with an injury).

MILLTHORPE AWARDS FOR PROGRESS AND LEARNING CONDUCT

This year students celebrated their achievements in terms of progress and learning conduct in house at our two award celebration events.

The evening for Years 9 and 10 was well received, as students were nominated by departments and each received a personalised message from their nominee. In Years 7 and 8, students were awarded their certificates in front of their peers in a less formal event with speeches and nominations interwoven with old-fashioned style party games.

The learning conduct certificates were awarded to students in each year group who had the highest average learning conduct across all subjects.

Traffic Signal Improvements
City of York Council are undertaking a programme of work to renew and improve traffic signals infrastructure across the city. Part of these works will be taking place on Scarcroft Road and include the replacing of traffic signals and changes to the footpaths at the crossing near the allotments. These works are planned to begin on Monday 3 July and are expected to last for around two weeks. There will be temporary traffic lights in place and a controlled pedestrian crossing will be provided during construction to allow pedestrians to cross the road safely. For more information please click here to read the letter from City of York Council.

Parent Governor Vacancies
This is prior notice that we have two vacancies for parent governors on Millthorpe’s Governing Board. The election will take place on Friday 15 September 2017 and a parent or carer can propose a candidate, stand for election and vote in the election, if he or she has a child registered at the school on the date of the election. If you are interested in standing or would like to nominate somebody, please click here for the parent governor nomination form.

Money for school meals paid via ParentPay
If you put money onto your child’s school meal account via ParentPay, it normally appears on the system that operates the tills in the canteen within a few minutes. However, we are aware that there have been occasions when it has taken much longer – up to 2 or 3 days in some cases. We are working with the software companies to address these delays as far as possible, but you should bear in mind that payments made in the evening may occasionally not transfer to the tills the following day. In response to this, we have changed our policy so that:

  • We will always make a meal available to students at lunchtime up to the value of the meal deal (£2.40), even if no funds are showing on their account
  • If providing a meal takes the account overdrawn by more than a few pounds, we will contact parents/carers to check that arrangements either already have been, or are being, made to cover the debt.

Thank you for your co-operation with this; please contact the school if you have any further queries.

Lockers
Please can you ask your child(ren) to empty their lockers completely before the summer break: if they want a locker next year, they will be assigned a new one in September. Over the summer, we will be clearing out all the lockers so that we can bring back into circulation any lockers ‘abandoned’ by Year 11 students and anyone else who no longer wants them. Students will have a chance to reclaim any property that is left in lockers but padlocks will be removed. This is also a good opportunity to make sure PE kits are washed/reviewed and any rubbish is disposed of (especially food!)

Also, just to note that the standard lock supplied by the school next year will be a combination lock, hopefully reducing the problems associated with lost keys. Of course, students can source a key operated lock if they prefer.

Year 10 Art GCSE Mock Exam
The Art Department very much value your support to ensure that the GCSE Art exams run smoothly next week. Students have a full day of Art Exams on Tuesday and Friday. Students should be in their normal art room by 8.30am at the latest (exams start at 8.45am prompt). Students register in the exam not with their Form Tutor. In line with the new GCSE rules, all presented preparation work must be handed in at the start of the exam including the practice piece. Students will be able to use their preparation work in the exam sessions but cannot work on it between exam sessions. If for any reason your child is not able to attend this or her GCSE Art exam please contact school by 8.30am on the morning of the exam. Please click here for more information on the arrangements for the Year 10 Mock Art Exam.

Jaron Joiner Presents Be Inspired 2 Tour Saturday 8 July 2017
American performer Jaron Joiner is coming to Millthorpe on 8 July for a performance which includes comedy, dance, improv and a little beatboxing. Tickets are £5, available from www.jaronjoiner.com. He is running a FREE taster session on Friday 7 July at 4pm in the Main Hall. This will act as workshop, working on kids’ confidence, current abilities and maybe finding some skills they didn’t know they had. It’s open to all ages and every attendee has the chance to be in the performance the following day. Jaron will be in the Library on Monday lunchtime for students who would like to find out more.

York Explore Summer Reading Challenge Volunteers
York Explore libraries are looking for student volunteers to help with their Summer Reading Challenge. Every summer holiday the library service invites children aged 4 – 11 to read 6 books over the summer break. The children receive prizes for each book they read and a medal and certificate when they complete the challenge. The student volunteers role would include talking to children about what they’ve been reading; helping them choose books; giving out prizes and certificates; helping with displays; and gathering feedback from children and their parents/carers. Please click here for more information.

How are we doing?
You may remember being asked to fill in a questionnaire when you attended parents’ evenings this year. The questionnaire, based on the Ofsted Parent View Survey, asks parents and carers to rate a number of statements ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. We have now collated all of your responses and are pleased to report that the feedback has been very positive and has also highlighted some areas for improvement. We have put together an article on the school website with the full results which you can view by clicking here.

Extra Training Day Wednesday 28 June 2017

Extra Training Day Wednesday 28 June 2017
A reminder that there is additional training day on Wednesday 28 June. The reason for the day is that the government have removed levels from both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 2 and we are now expected to assess without them. Our plans are in place, but our teachers need time to write new assessment criteria for our current schemes of teaching. The new system of assessment will also mean changes to how we report to parents and carers in the future and we will inform you about these in due course.

School Uniform Warm Weather Arrangements
Starting from Monday, and running to the end of term, students will not be expected to wear their blazer in school because of the warm weather, although they can if they choose. The dates of the visits for each Tutor Group are as follows:
Wednesday 21 June: 7ARR and 7DJM
Thursday 22 June: 7LBA and 7LDW
Friday 23 June: 7MEW and 7RIY
7ALJ have been divided between the three days due to coach numbers, your child will have been told which day they are going on. Students will need to bring a pencil and rubber, as well as a pack up and plenty to drink as the weather is forecast to be very warm. If it is particularly sunny you should supply your child with sun cream and, if your child suffers from travel sickness, please ensure they have taken (and bring with them if required) appropriate medication. On a wet day paths may be slippery, sturdy footwear is therefore essential.

Students will be allowed to bring mobile phones, MP3 players etc. on the trip but such items are solely their responsibility. Students are not required to wear school uniform.

On the day of the trip students must meet in the Dining Hall by 8.40am, if your child is going to be late or is unable to attend due to illness please contact school. The coaches will arrive back to school at approximately 4.00pm (depending on the traffic). Please bear this in mind if you are picking up your child or you need to make any arrangements for your child’s journey home.

Sports Day Monday 26 June 2017
