Art Messages

Year 11 GCSE Externally Set Assignment

Year 11 Art students were given the AQA question paper for the externally set assignment during the launch lesson on Thursday. You can support your child this week by discussing ideas for questions they are interested in. Please sign the blue reply slip which your child will use to record their initial ideas. Students must hand in their reply slip by next Friday (18 January) at the latest. A full schedule, including final exam dates is available on the Art page of the school website (link below).

Please note that it is an exam regulation that exam related preparation or final piece work must not be posted on any social media site. This restriction remains in place until the end of September 2019 and will also apply to coursework effective from the school hand-in deadline of Wednesday 8 May 2019. Your child is aware of this.

PE Reminders

Cold weather clothing

As the weather starts to change, parents/carers and students are reminded that wearing two layers for outdoor games is a good idea, i.e. a t-shirt/skin/thermal layer under a reversible top for boys, or a PE top under a fleece for girls. A suitable pair of gloves and/or hat may also be appropriate, especially for students who struggle with the cold.

Students unable to take part in PE

Parents/carers should write a note in their child’s planner if he or she is unable to take part in PE. Students are expected to bring their PE/Games kit to every lesson in any case so that they may be involved in the lesson as far as possible (e.g. umpiring). If it isn’t appropriate for your child to change into PE kit, please could you contact your child’s PE teacher to discuss.

Labelling

Please remember that all items of kit should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

Inhalers

If your child requires an inhaler for asthma, please remind them that it is very important that they take it to every PE lesson. If they do forget, they must advise their PE teacher at the beginning of the lesson. Spare inhalers are held in the office for emergencies.

Overview of Art Topics

An overview of the topics to be studied by each year group can now be accessed via the school website. Follow the links in the ‘Project Outlines’ section of the Art department page: www.millthorpeschool.co.uk/millthorpe/departments/art/

Piercings

A reminder of our expectations regarding piercings for students:

– students with pierced ears are permitted to have one plain stud in each ear; hooped earrings are not allowed.

– no other piercings are acceptable: if a student has already had an additional piercing made, any jewellery must be removed during the school day or a completely clear plastic retainer should be worn.

From this point forward, no new additional piercings are allowed and students will be instructed to remove anything worn in such piercings.

Travel Survey

As part of the planning application for the all-weather sports facilities, the school has been asked to commission a travel survey of the different modes of transport used to access the site on two particular days (Wednesday 14 November and Saturday 17 November). This will involve setting up cameras at each of the school entrances on these days: the purpose is simply to tally up the number of journeys made and no personal data will be collected or retained as part of this exercise.

Parent Governor Vacancies

There are currently two vacancies for parent governors to join the school Governing Body. Effective governance is essential for the success of a school, so please consider whether this is something that you could do at Millthorpe. General guidance about the role of parent governors can be found here: Being a Parent Governor

Building Works

By the time we return after Half Term, the building works will be almost complete. Many thanks to everyone for bearing with us whilst the work has been taking place.

The plans for developing the all weather pitch on the school site are still underway: we are currently waiting for a decision by the Local Authority planning committee. We will also be submitting a bid for further funding from the DfE to replace the temporary classroom and Science Labs next to the main field – we will hear if this has been successful around the end of March.

Dining Room refurbishment celebration! Monday 5 November

To mark the completion of refurbishment works in the kitchen and the reopening of the canteen for hot food, we will be holding a celebration lunch on Monday 5 November. This will include party food, music and spot prizes. I hope that your child will be able to join us. Year 7 students will be released from lessons early on Monday so they can familiarise themselves with the hot meal service.

Just a reminder that a ‘meal deal’ (hot main course and pudding) costs £2.40; and to make sure you top up your child’s account on ParentPay if you need to.

GCSE Science Revision Sessions

The Science Department will be running a weekly Science revision drop-in session in A9 after school every Thursday. This is open to all KS4 Students. This will give students the opportunity to revise in a supportive and structured environment with teachers available to help. This also gives students the opportunity to complete their weekly Science Homework with Science staff available to support them.
