The Governing Body
The Governing Body's goal is to ensure that Millthorpe continues to be a vibrant school of educational excellence where every child is inspired and helped to reach their potential.
Millthorpe's governing body consists of 18 members, drawn from parents, staff, Local Authority representatives and members of the local community, as well as the Head teacher, and is led by the Chair of Governors (elected annually from the membership of the governing body).
We take ultimate responsibility for the well being of the school. While we are not closely involved with the day-to-day running of the school, we must ensure that it is fully staffed, financially secure and that its pupils are succeeding. We act as a "critical friend" to the Head teacher, discussing the strategic direction of the school and its long-term plans.
The governors meet once every half term as a whole group to discuss and approve (or not) matters about Millthorpe. Much of the work, however, is done in the committees that meet about once a term, to address particular issues - Finance, Staffing, Premises and Curriculum - as well as occasional issues such as Discipline and Appeals. Our meeting schedule is included in the school calendar, and copies of policies and Full Governing Body minutes are available for inspection in school. Parents are welcome as non-voting observers at our Business Meetings; please contact the school office if you would like to attend.
Governors keep in touch with the school by visiting as often as possible and also by maintaining a "link" with a particular subject area. Each link governor will meet their Head of Department at regular intervals to discuss progress and developments within the subject. We interact regularly with the Local Authority (City of York Council) and governors from other schools in York through a comprehensive Governor Training Programme provided by the Authority's Governance Support Service.
