Welcome to the Mathematics
Department
The department is committed to developing the skills of
pupils of all levels of ability and to fostering a real enjoyment
of mathematics.
Throughout their time at Millthorpe pupils are taught in ability
groupings. This allows those pupils who have a real flair for
the subject to build on the success they have already experienced.
At the same time those who
feel less secure about the subject gain the confidence they
need in order for them not only to enjoy mathematics but also
to make real progress.
Results in Year 9 National Tests and in Year 11 GCSE Examinations
are consistently well above average. In June 2006, our most
able pupils will be entered for GCSE at the end of Year10.
The School's Second Specialism has brought extra resources
to the department. We have been able to equip four teaching
rooms with interactive whiteboards and to increase the number
of specialist staff, thus reducing class size in certain year
groups.
We have developed a programme for our feeder primary schools
which will be delivered the department and aims to smooth the
transition of pupils. Our range of extra curricular activities
includes entering a large number of able students for National
Competitions and enabling Year 11 students to attend lectures
at York University .
Many of our students go on to study Mathematics and Further
Mathematics at 'A' Level. |
