Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is a relatively new subject on the curriculum at Millthorpe. It is one of the three vocational subjects that we offer at the school in KS4. We are now in our third year and it is proving to be a popular course, with many pupils continuing to study the subject at York College when they leave at the end of Year 11.

The course consists of three units; two are assessed through coursework and one by an end of year examination.

  1. Health, Social Care and Early Years services, assessed by coursework.
  2. Promoting health and well-being, assessed by coursework.
  3. Understanding personal growth and development assessed by an end of year external examination.

It is an ideal course for those pupils considering a profession in the NHS e.g. nursing or Occupational Therapy or Social care services e.g. Care Assistant or those considering working with young children

As this is a vocational subject we link with industry and businesses wherever possible for example in year 10 pupils visit local gyms and leisure centres to learn about exercise and health. We have visiting speakers such as the school nurse and personal trainers. In year 11 we have a study day where local health professionals deliver workshops to increase the pupils understanding about he careers in health and social care settings. Pupils also have an extra work experience visit to a Health, Social Care or Early Years setting to enable them to work shadow a professional.
