Special Educational Needs
The support and encouragement of students with SEN is of
great importance to Millthorpe School. In line with our
policy on Inclusion, we support pupils with a range of learning,
physical and emotional needs. We hope to ensure that all
students are helped to work to the best of their ability
and most take GCSE examinations with considerable success.
All pupils with Special Educational Needs are encouraged
to participate in mainstream classes working with support
provided by the local education authority and the school.
Work is modified as appropriate and pupils are involved in
setting their own targets for improvement. Members of the
SEN department staff are always available to help and support
pupils at lunchtimes and before school. Parents are regularly
involved in reviewing the needs of their children and they
are always welcome to come in and see Mr Butterworth, the
School’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator.
We liaise closely with our feeder primary schools so that
we are well aware of the needs of our pupils before they
arrive and we encourage the parents of any Year 6 pupil who
may have a special need to come in and talk to the department
before their child starts with us.
The governor with responsibility for SEN is Mr. N. Maitland
who can be contacted via the Chair of Governors.
The School’s Special Educational Needs Policy is
in line with the DfES Special Needs Code of Practice (2001)
and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001). |
