Key Stage 4

As a Language College, we want all students to have the opportunity to study more than one foreign language, both for pleasure and the increased job prospects this brings. As the UK plays its part within Europe and the global economy, there is an increasing need for people with skills in languages. People who speak more than one foreign language, and people with specialist skills and a foreign language alongside these, certainly enjoy increased career opportunities and financial rewards.

At Millthorpe there are three main ways to study more than one language:

  • The first is to take the second language as a GCSE option on-timetable. This second language can be French or German.

  • The second route is to attend an "Early Bird" course in French or German. This "Early Bird" course runs three mornings per week from 8.25am until 9.10am and for those who embark on the course, it is a normal part of their timetable, with all the usual expectations in terms of homework and attendance. Here is what some of our "Early Bird" students have said:

'It's an extra GCSE and you soon get used to the early mornings.'

'It's good because you get a whole extra GCSE by coming in a bit earlier three times a week.'

'Taking the Early Bird option meant that not only could I do two languages, I could also use the GCSE options column to do something else - very useful if you want to do Graphics and Art, for example, as well as both languages.'

'Having two languages looks very good on your CV and may give you an advantage when you're looking for a job.'

  • The third route is to attend a Twilight course in Spanish or Italian. GCSE Spanish is "ab initio", where students begin Spanish from scratch and take an accelerated GCSE course. Because students have not studied Spanish at Key Stage 3, the Spanish GCSE course is very intensive and therefore students will need to achieve a NC Level 6 in French/German at the end of Year 9, if they are to be accepted onto the ab initio Spanish GCSE course. Those students who have studied Italian in Year 9 can follow a Twilight GCSE course. Twilight courses take place twice a week after school from 3.30pm till 5.00pm. The Italian course is taught in partnership with All Saints School and will take place at All Saints upper site, which is five minutes walk from Millthorpe.
